Skoro Doma, (Almost Home), is a series documenting the Norval Queen of Peace Croatian Church in Halton Hills, Ontario, and it’s community. Dr. Stjepan Tomkin established this space in 1977, writing to the Bishop of Hamilton to request permission to build the church that stands today. In his letters, Tomkin states his wish for this establishment to preserve and expand our heritage, creating a place where Croatians can feel as though they are at home, even in Canada. The Norval Queen of Peace Church is regarded as one of the main centres in Ontario for Croatians to gather. It has housed countless weddings, baptisms, folklore events, and community gatherings over the years. Consequently, I view this as a very sacred place, not only because it is a church, but because it is pivotal for the continued celebration of Croatian culture, especially for the diaspora and younger generations, such as myself.
